Monthly New Moon Ritual

Amavasya Yagam · Monthly Sarva Dosha Shanti

Every month, on the night of the New Moon, the unseen forces that accumulate across a person's life reach their most active point. The Amavasya Yagam is the Peetam's monthly Vedic fire ritual performed at twilight for the dissolution of all doshas, the resolution of ancestral afflictions, and targeted protective intervention — tailored to the devotee's specific purpose.

Why Amavasya Is the Most Powerful Tithi for Dosha Dissolution

In the Vedic lunar calendar, the thirty tithis of a month are each associated with specific forms of energy. Amavasya — the New Moon — is the tithi of maximum lunar withdrawal, when the moon's light is entirely absent from the sky.

The absence of lunar light on Amavasya creates a unique energetic state in which unseen forces — pitru dosha (ancestral debt), graha dosha (planetary afflictions), and abhichara (hostile energies directed by others) — are at their most perceptible, and therefore most accessible to Vedic intervention. What remains hidden on other tithis becomes visible and addressable on Amavasya.

This is why the Vedic tradition has always assigned Amavasya as the primary tithi for ancestor-related work (tarpana, shraddha), and for rituals aimed at the pacification of karmic and energetic afflictions. The darkness is not an obstacle — it is the very condition that makes the dissolution possible.

The Peetam's Amavasya Yagam harnesses this quality directly. Bagalamukhi Devi, as the paralyser of all adverse forces, works most powerfully in the space where those forces are most concentrated — the New Moon evening. Devotees who need a deeper theological understanding of Sarva Dosha Shanthi may also read the dedicated Sarva Dosha Shanti Yagam page for the full Vedic framework.

The Amavasya Advantage

  • Pitru doshas and ancestral afflictions are most accessible for dissolution on the New Moon tithi
  • The evening Sandhya window (twilight) compounds the tithi's power — a double sacred threshold
  • Performed at a consecrated Bagalamukhi Devi temple — not a rented hall or travelling puja
  • Each devotee's intention is read aloud individually — your purpose shapes the mantras and offerings
  • Live darshan every Amavasya on YouTube — remote devotees witness the full ceremony in real time
Why Are You Booking?

Choose Your Purpose — The Acharyas Tailor the Ritual

When you book the Amavasya Yagam, you select the intention behind your sankalp. The chief acharya uses your stated purpose to shape the specific mantras, offerings, and invocations — directing Bagalamukhi Devi's power precisely where you need it most.

Court Case & Legal Matters

For devotees entangled in ongoing litigation, property disputes, civil or criminal proceedings — where resolution has stalled and the opposing party continues to act with impunity. The yagam is invoked to still the enemy's actions and create conditions for a favourable outcome.

Enemy / Opposition / Black Magic (Abhichara)

For those experiencing effects of abhichara (deliberate black magic), sustained hostility from rivals or enemies, or the presence of drishti dosha (evil eye). Bagalamukhi Devi as stambhini paralyses and neutralises hostile forces at their source.

Health Issues

For persistent, recurring, or inexplicable health afflictions — particularly those that do not respond fully to medical treatment and may carry an astrological or karmic root. The yagam addresses the dosha underlying the physical condition, complementing medical care.

Business / Career Setback

For devotees experiencing financial stagnation, blocked career progress, business disputes, or an unexplained pattern of setbacks despite sustained effort. The yagam removes the energetic obstacles that legitimate effort alone cannot overcome.

General Sankalp / Family Welfare

For those who carry a general weight of difficulties across multiple areas of life — or who wish to offer the yagam for the wellbeing of an entire family. Sarva Dosha Shanthi at the Amavasya addresses what cannot be named specifically but is nonetheless real.

You may select more than one purpose at booking — see the FAQ for details. Multiple intentions are addressed individually in the sankalp reading.

The Cosmological Logic

Why Evening · Why 6:00 PM

Amavasya Peaks in the Evening

The Amavasya tithi, like all Hindu tithis, has a precise astronomical window. The New Moon reaches its peak intensity in the evening hours — when the sun has set and the absence of lunar light is complete. A yagam begun at 6 PM sits at the exact confluence of the tithi's peak and the nightfall transition.

Sandhya — The Sacred Twilight Window

In Vedic tradition, Sandhya (twilight) is one of the most auspicious moments for worship — a threshold between day and night where the boundaries between seen and unseen become thin. The three daily Sandhyavandanam prayers mark this quality. A yagam starting at the evening Sandhya on Amavasya is performing at a double sacred threshold.

On Amavasya, the unseen forces that accumulate across a person's life — hostile energies, karmic residues, ancestral unresolved matters — are most concentrated and most accessible. Performing the yagam at 6 PM on this tithi is not incidental. The timing is the theology.

Inside the Yagam

The 4-Hour Ritual Flow

From the first Sankalp recitation at 6:00 PM to prasadam distribution at 10:00 PM — each stage has a specific function in the Vedic framework.

1

Sankalp + Intention Reading  6:00 – 6:30 PM

The chief acharya formally opens the yagam by reciting each devotee's name, gothram, nakshatra, Rasi, and stated purpose — dedicating the entire ceremony to their welfare. This is the act of sankalp: declaring the intention before the Goddess so that the ritual's benefit is directed with precision. Remote sankalps are read aloud exactly as in-person ones.

2

Ganapathi Homam  6:30 – 7:00 PM

No Vedic ritual proceeds without first honouring Lord Ganapathi, the remover of obstacles and the guardian of all auspicious beginnings. The Ganapathi Homam opens the yagashala for the main ceremony, clearing any energetic obstruction to the proceeding itself and invoking divine protection for all participants.

3

Bagalamukhi Maha Mantra Japa + Offerings  7:00 – 9:00 PM

This is the heart of the yagam — two hours of sustained, counted repetition of the Bagalamukhi Stambhana mantra, accompanied by offerings of sanctified herbs, grains, and materials prescribed in the Atharvana Veda. Each mantra recitation is made with a fire offering (aahuthi) into the yagakunda. The acharyas work through each devotee's specific purpose during this stage, directing the invocation accordingly.

4

Purnahuti and Aarati  9:00 – 9:30 PM

The Purnahuti is the single large final offering that formally seals the yagam and locks in its benefit for all sankalp participants. Following it, the full Aarati is performed before the Bagalamukhi Devi idol in the sanctum — a moment of collective devotion. Both the Purnahuti and the Aarati are live on YouTube for remote devotees.

5

Prasadam Distribution + Speed Post Dispatch  9:30 – 10:00 PM

Sacred vibhuti (holy ash) and kumkum blessed during the yagam are packed and offered to in-person devotees at the close of the ceremony. Prasadam packets for remote sankalp participants are prepared for Speed Post dispatch to their registered addresses — delivery within India typically takes 5–10 working days.

Critical Deadline

Booking Closes at 3:00 PM on Amavasya Day

The booking deadline is 3:00 PM on the day of Amavasya — no exceptions.

The acharyas need adequate time between receiving your sankalp details and the 6:00 PM start to prepare the sankalp patra — the written document listing your name, gothram, nakshatra, and chosen purpose. This preparation is what makes your participation in the ritual precise and personal, not generic.

Bookings received after 3:00 PM on Amavasya day are automatically carried forward to the next Amavasya. The yagam is performed monthly, so you will never miss it permanently — but you may miss the current one.

We recommend booking at least 24 hours before the Amavasya — and ideally a week ahead — so there is time to confirm gothram, nakshatra, and the precise wording of your purpose.

Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What devotees ask most often before booking the Amavasya Yagam — answered plainly.

How does this differ from the dedicated Bagalamukhi Sarva Dosha Shanti Yagam page?
They describe the same monthly ritual — performed every Amavasya evening at 6 PM. The Sarva Dosha Shanti page provides a deeper theological treatment of doshas and the broader Vedic framework of the yagam. This Amavasya Yagam page focuses on the New Moon cycle and purpose-based booking — it is built for devotees who already know what they need and want to book by intention. If you want fuller context on what Sarva Dosha Shanthi means spiritually before booking, read the Sarva Dosha page first.
Can I select multiple purposes — for example, court case AND health?
Yes. The acharyas can hold more than one intention in a single sankalp. If you are dealing with both a legal matter and a persistent health issue, mention both clearly in the booking form or via WhatsApp before the Amavasya. The chief acharya will address each purpose individually when reading your sankalp during the yagam. Each additional named intention does not incur a separate charge — the ₹1,500 per head covers all purposes you declare under a single person's sankalp.
What if I miss the 3 PM booking deadline on Amavasya day?
Bookings received after 3:00 PM on Amavasya day are carried forward to the next Amavasya. The acharyas need the time between 3 PM and 6 PM to prepare the sankalp patra accurately — reading it cold, just before the yagam starts, reduces the precision of the invocation. To ensure inclusion in the current month's yagam, book at least 24 hours before — or ideally a week ahead so there is time to confirm all sankalp details.
Can family members be added to a single sankalp?
Yes. Multiple family members may be included in a single booking. Each person's name, gothram, and nakshatra (if known) should be listed separately, as the acharya recites each name individually during the sankalp. The sankalp contribution is ₹1,500 per head — so a booking for two family members is ₹3,000. WhatsApp the temple helpline when booking for more than two people, so the office can confirm all details before the acharya prepares the sankalp patra.
When is the next Amavasya from today?
Amavasya falls once every lunar month on the New Moon tithi. The exact date shifts each month in the Gregorian calendar. Visit the Upcoming Events & Muhurthams page for the current month's Amavasya date, or WhatsApp the helpline directly. Booking is open year-round — once the current Amavasya closes, the next one is available for registration immediately.
Can devotees from outside India book the Amavasya Yagam?
Absolutely. Devotees from any country may book online. Submit your sankalp details, pay the ₹1,500 contribution, and the acharyas will perform the yagam on your behalf the coming Amavasya. You can watch the live darshan on the Sree Suryamangalam YouTube channel every Amavasya evening. For prasadam dispatch to international addresses: Speed Post currently covers all Indian addresses as standard; for overseas delivery, WhatsApp the temple before booking to confirm postage arrangements — additional postal charges may apply depending on your country.
