The Sacred Science of Fire

What is a Homam?

"Homam" is a ritual in which offerings are made into a sacred fire. The root word is Ha — meaning "offering" or "sacrifice" in Sanskrit. Just as the five elements exist in the cosmos around us, they dwell inside the human body as well.

Inside each being, Agni (fire) exists in two forms: as Jatara-agni — the digestive fire of the physical body — and as Bhoota-agni — the internal spiritual fire of the subtle body. In most people, Jatara-agni burns brightly while Bhoota-agni smoulders dim. The yogi, through sadhana, converts Jatara-agni into Bhoota-agni — which is why a realised soul feels no hunger and can sustain divinity within.

When a yogi performs nama, japa, mantra, and offerings to a deity, the deity enters the Bhoota-agni and receives the offering directly. Because the ordinary person's Bhoota-agni burns poorly, we make use of an external sacred fire — invoking the deity into it so the deity may receive the offerings and, in return, fulfil the righteous desire of the person who performs the homam.

Beyond its spiritual dimension, homam is a purifying process: the offerings — ghee, herbs, grains, wood — when burned in the prescribed manner, are understood to revitalise and cleanse both the environment and the subtle atmosphere of the home.

ॐ ह्रीं बगलामुखि
सर्वदुष्टानां वाचं
मुखं पदं स्तम्भय

"Om Hreem Bagalamukhi — still the speech of all hostile forces, paralyse their movement and actions."

Bhoota-agni Activation

The external sacred fire acts as proxy for the subtle inner fire — enabling the deity to receive offerings directly through the priest's invocation.

Mantra Energy

Vedic mantras chanted during the homam carry precise vibrations that invoke, sustain and satisfy the presiding deity for the duration of the ritual.

Devata Sankalp

Your name, nakshatra and gothram are read aloud — the sankalp binds the ritual's benefit specifically to you and your family, not to a generic offering.

Understanding the Difference

Homam · Yagam · Pooja

Three distinct modes of worship — each suited to a different need and scale. Choosing the right one matters.

Homam

  • Sacred fire ritual with offerings of ghee, herbs and grains — typically 1–3 hours
  • Performed for a specific sankalp — a named purpose such as health, marriage or obstacle removal
  • Can be performed on any auspicious day; smaller scale than a yagam; most accessible entry point
Best for:

Personal intentions · ongoing monthly seva · first-time devotees

Yagam (Yajna)

  • Larger Vedic sacrifice offered to specific deities — typically 3–6 hours with extended mantra japa and purnahuti
  • Yajamana (sponsor), family, and attending priests participate together; divine grace extends to all present
  • Fulfils the four goals — Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha — and discharges karmic debt at greater depth
Best for:

Major life transitions · Amavasya & Pournami rituals · deep dosha resolution

Pooja

  • Devotional worship with flowers, lamps, incense and naivedyam — not necessarily fire-centred
  • Shorter and more accessible — typically 45 minutes to 1.5 hours; ideal for recurring weekly devotion
  • Cultivates bhakti (devotion) and invites divine grace as an ongoing daily or weekly practice
Best for:

Lakshmi Pooja · auspicious occasions · steady devotional practice

Poornima Morning Procedure

The Ritual Sequence of Maha Kubera Dhana Akarshana Yagam

Every Poornima morning, the temple performs four rituals in a single unbroken sequence — opening with Ganapathi for auspicious beginnings and closing with Kubera for material grace. Sankalp is taken for all four together.

Step 1 — Maha Ganapathi Homam

The ritual opens with Ganapathi Homam for the removal of obstacles and an auspicious beginning. Without Ganesha's grace, no subsequent ritual takes root.

Step 2 — Jyeshtha Devi Pooja

Worship of Jyeshtha Devi to dissolve adverse conditions and stabilise the household before invoking prosperity. The pacifying preface to the prosperity invocation.

Step 3 — Kubera Yagam

The yagam itself — sacred fire offerings to Kubera for growth, business progress, financial stability and material support flowing toward the devotee's purpose.

Personal Guidance

Online Astrology Consultation

Beyond the scheduled homams, Swamiji's lineage offers personal Prasana Sastra horoscope readings — the ancient art of interpreting the living query, not just the birth chart. A Prasana reading is often more immediate: it answers the precise question you are carrying right now.

Consultations cover marriage timing and horoscope matching, career direction and planetary periods (dasha), nakshatra dosha and planetary remediation, and personal sadhana guidance suited to your rashi and nakshatra. Most consultations happen over WhatsApp video after the devotee submits their date, time and place of birth, along with the specific question.

Swamiji has guided seekers across India, the Gulf, Singapore, the UK and the US — politicians, industrialists and ordinary householders alike — for over four decades.

Frequently Asked

About booking a homam with us

Common questions devotees ask before their first sankalp. WhatsApp us for anything specific.

How do I know which homam is right for me?
The simplest guide: match the purpose to your current need. If you have an unresolved ancestral issue or recurring unexplained disturbances at home, Thila Homam or Amavasya Yagam is the first step. For marriage delay, Swayamvara Homam or Kalathra Vasyam Homam. For health and vitality, Mrutha Sanjeevani. For business stability, Dhana Vasya. If you are uncertain, WhatsApp us with your gothram, nakshatra and the specific concern — our purohits will recommend the right ritual based on Swamiji's guidance.
What is the sankalp procedure and what do I need to provide?
Sankalp is the formal declaration of intent made at the beginning of the ritual, naming the devotee for whom the homam is being performed. You will need to provide your full name, gothram (ancestral lineage), nakshatra (birth star), rashi (moon sign), and the specific purpose. If you do not know your gothram or nakshatra, the booking form has a "Guide me" option and one of our acharyas will assist you over WhatsApp before the ritual begins. After the homam, our team confirms all the details with you on WhatsApp.
Can multiple family members be included in one homam?
Yes. Many families include husband, wife, and children under a single sankalp. Each additional family member's name and nakshatra is read during the ritual. The price shown is per head (per named sankalp) — so a family of four would book four sankalps. For the Amavasya Yagam and Thila Homam in particular, including all family members in the ancestor peace ritual is strongly recommended.
Do you perform homams for non-Hindu devotees?
Our temple follows the Atharvana Veda tradition, and all rituals are performed within that lineage. Devotees from all backgrounds are welcome to book a sankalp — faith and sincerity of intention matter more than any label. The only requirement is that you provide a name and a specific purpose for the sankalp. Swamiji has guided seekers of many traditions over the decades.
How do I attend a homam live if I am abroad?
All major homams — Amavasya Yagam, Pournami Kubera Yagam, Thila Homam and the monthly Maha Ganapathi — are streamed live on our YouTube channel (Sree Suryamangalam). After booking, you receive an email confirmation with the scheduled time (IST) and the live link. Your name and gothram will be read aloud by the acharya during the ritual. Prasadam is shipped internationally via courier on request.
How is the prasadam delivered after a homam?
Yagam prasadam — kumkum, vibhuti, akshat, raksha — is dispatched via India Post / Speed Post within 3–5 working days of the ritual. International courier is available on request (Gulf, Singapore, UK, US, Australia — most locations served). Prasadam from major yagams arrives in a sealed cloth pouch with a printed sankalp slip confirming the ritual, date and your name. Tracking details are sent over WhatsApp.
